Big Cats
"Big cat" is a collective term for the largest species of felines, especially ones in the genus Panthera, such as lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars, as well as cheetahs and cougars, large cats not in the group Panthera and the snow leopard, formerly recognized as a member of Panthera. (The word Panther is applied both to the melanistic variant of the leopard and as one of several variant names of the cougar.) The term 'big cat' is used to distinguish these large felines from the domestic cat and other smaller felidae species. All of the large cats are efficient predators, especially upon such large herbivores as deer and antelope.
